The most precise physics experiment of the 19th century produced a clear result. The scientific establishment spent 18 years inventing increasingly creative reasons why the result was wrong. It was not wrong. We have reviewed the folders. The folders are thick.
The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has been sitting on this file for some time. We opened it in 1887. We are opening it again now. The file concerns an experiment conducted by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley in Cleveland, Ohio, in the summer of 1887. The experiment was the most precise measurement of its kind ever attempted. It produced a clear, unambiguous result. The scientific establishment looked at the result, looked at each other, and spent the next eighteen years explaining why the result was not what it appeared to be. We are here to tell you that the result was exactly what it appeared to be. We have reviewed the folders. The folders are thick. We have bought a second filing cabinet. The second filing cabinet is labelled M. M is for Michelson. M is also for Morley. M is also for the word the scientific establishment did not want to say: Motionless.
We want to be clear about our position at FakeX before we proceed. We are not here to tell you the Earth is definitely stationary. We are not here to tell you the Earth is definitely moving. We are here to tell you that Michelson and Morley ran an experiment to find out, got a definitive answer, and were immediately told by the scientific establishment that their apparatus must have shrunk. We are here to examine that claim. We have examined it. The examination is complete. The examination is in the folder. The folder is labelled S. S is for Shrinkage. S is also for Suspicious.
THE AETHER: WHAT EVERYONE KNEW WAS DEFINITELY REAL
To understand what Michelson and Morley were looking for, you need to understand what the entire scientific establishment of the 19th century was absolutely certain existed: the luminiferous aether. The aether was a hypothetical substance — invisible, non-tangible, permeating all of space — through which light waves were believed to travel. Every wave known to science required a medium: water waves need water, sound waves need air, waves on a string need a string. Light was a wave. Therefore, light needed a medium. The medium was the aether. This was not a fringe theory. This was the consensus. This was what everyone knew. This was in the textbooks. The textbooks were confident.
The problem was that nobody had ever detected the aether. It was, by definition, undetectable by direct means. But there was an indirect method. If the Earth was moving through the aether — which it must be, since it orbits the Sun at 30 kilometres per second — then light travelling in the direction of Earth's motion should be slightly slower than light travelling perpendicular to it. The difference would be tiny. But it would be measurable. If you had a sufficiently precise instrument. Albert Michelson had a sufficiently precise instrument. He had built it himself. He was very proud of it. He had every right to be.
THE EXPERIMENT: WHAT THEY BUILT AND WHAT THEY FOUND
The Michelson-Morley interferometer split a beam of light into two perpendicular paths using a half-silvered mirror. Each beam travelled to a mirror and back. The two beams were then recombined and projected onto a screen. If the Earth was moving through the aether, the beam travelling parallel to that motion would take slightly longer to complete its round trip than the beam travelling perpendicular to it. This difference would show up as a shift in the interference pattern on the screen — a measurable, quantifiable fringe shift. Michelson calculated exactly how large the shift should be if the Earth was moving through the aether at its known orbital velocity. The apparatus was sensitive enough to detect a shift one-tenth that size. It was, by every measure, the most sensitive experiment of its kind ever built.

The interferometer was mounted on a massive stone slab floating in a pool of liquid mercury to eliminate vibration. It was rotated slowly through 360 degrees so that the two arms would take turns being aligned with and perpendicular to the Earth's direction of motion. The experiment was repeated at different times of day and different times of year to account for the Earth's rotation and its changing orbital direction. Michelson and Morley were not cutting corners. They were not being sloppy. They were being extraordinarily careful. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has reviewed the methodology. The expected fringe shift, if the aether existed and the Earth was moving through it, was approximately 0.4 fringes. The apparatus could detect shifts as small as 0.01 fringes. The result they obtained: approximately 0.01 fringes. Which is to say: nothing. No shift. No aether wind. No detectable motion of the Earth through any medium whatsoever. The experiment was a complete success. It found exactly what it was looking for. What it was looking for was nothing. It found nothing. Precisely, measurably, reproducibly nothing.

The result was published in 1887. The scientific establishment read it. The scientific establishment did not say "interesting, perhaps the Earth is not moving through an aether." The scientific establishment said "there must be something wrong with the experiment." This is a reasonable first response. It is less reasonable as a permanent position maintained for eighteen years across multiple repetitions of the experiment by multiple independent teams, all of whom found the same thing. We are noting this. We have noted it. It is in the minutes.
The first major attempt to explain away the result came in 1889, two years after the experiment, from Irish physicist George FitzGerald. FitzGerald's explanation was, and we want to be precise here, that the apparatus had physically shrunk. Not metaphorically. Not as a mathematical abstraction. Literally shrunk. The stone slab, the mirrors, the metal arms — all of it had contracted in the direction of motion through the aether, by precisely the amount needed to make the result come out as zero. The contraction was exactly the right size to cancel the expected fringe shift. It was, FitzGerald suggested, caused by the electromagnetic forces holding matter together being affected by motion through the aether. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has reviewed this hypothesis. We have reviewed it carefully. We have reviewed it several times. We have a question. We have written the question down. The question is: how convenient.
THE REPEATS: THEY KEPT DOING THE EXPERIMENT. IT KEPT SAYING THE SAME THING.
Michelson and Morley did not run the experiment once and go home. The experiment was repeated. And repeated. And repeated again. By Michelson himself, by Morley with Dayton Miller, by other independent teams across different countries, at different altitudes, at different times of year. The results were consistent. The fringe shift was, within measurement error, zero. The Earth showed no detectable motion through any aether. Every single time. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has reviewed all of these results. The pattern is clear. Every time the experiment was run with sufficient precision, the result was null. Every time a positive result was claimed, subsequent analysis found a systematic error in the apparatus — usually temperature. The aether was never found. The Earth's motion through the aether was never detected. Not once. Not in any of the repetitions. Not at sea level. Not at altitude. Not in summer. Not in winter. Not in America. Not in Germany. Not ever.
THE SHRINKAGE HYPOTHESIS: AN HONEST ASSESSMENT
We want to be fair to FitzGerald. He was not a fool. He was a serious physicist making a serious attempt to explain a genuinely puzzling result within the framework of the physics of his time. His 1889 letter to the journal Science was short — barely a paragraph — but it contained a genuine physical insight: if the electromagnetic forces holding matter together are affected by motion through the aether, then matter might indeed contract along its direction of motion. This was not a ridiculous idea. It was a reasonable hypothesis. It was also, as it turned out, not quite right — but it was pointing in the right direction.
In 1895, Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz developed FitzGerald's idea into a full mathematical framework. The Lorentz transformations described how lengths, times, and electromagnetic forces would change for an object moving through the aether. The mathematics was correct. The physical interpretation — that these changes were caused by motion through a real, physical aether — was not. But the mathematics was correct. This is important. We are noting it. It is in the folder.

If matter was physically contracting due to aether pressure, this should produce a measurable optical effect in transparent materials. He found nothing. No birefringence. No contraction. The apparatus had not shrunk. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has noted this. We have noted it formally. We have noted it in the minutes and in the folder and on the wall. The wall is getting full.
EINSTEIN: THE MAN WHO SAID WHAT THE EXPERIMENT ACTUALLY SHOWED
In 1905, Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity. Einstein's approach was different from FitzGerald's and Lorentz's in one fundamental respect: instead of asking "how does the aether affect matter?", Einstein asked "what if there is no aether?" He proposed two postulates. First: the speed of light is the same for all observers, regardless of their motion. Second: the laws of physics are the same for all observers moving at constant velocity. From these two postulates, everything else followed. Including, as a mathematical consequence, a form of length contraction — but not because matter was being physically squeezed by an aether. Rather, because space and time themselves are relative to the observer's state of motion.
Einstein's interpretation of the Michelson-Morley result was elegantly simple: the speed of light is the same for every observer, so of course the two beams in the interferometer travel at the same speed. Of course there is no fringe shift. There was never going to be a fringe shift. Not because the apparatus shrank. Not because the aether was being dragged along by the Earth. But because the speed of light is constant, the aether does not exist, and the experiment was measuring exactly what it should have been measuring: nothing. EDITORIAL NOTE — FAKEX EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS DIVISION — CREDIBILITY ASSESSMENT
We want to be transparent with our readers. The special theory of relativity — the idea that space contracts, time dilates, simultaneity is relative, and the speed of light is the same for all observers regardless of their motion — does sound, and we are being honest here, exactly like something someone told us down the Cock and Badger last week. Very confident. Very detailed. Completely unfalsifiable by anyone present. The kind of theory that gets more elaborate every time you ask a follow-up question. We are not saying Einstein was wrong. We are saying that "time is relative and the universe has no preferred reference frame" is precisely the sort of thing you hear at closing time from a man who has been nursing the same pint for three hours and keeps saying "no but hear me out." Michelson and Morley were not failures. Their experiment was not a failure. A "null result" is not a failed experiment — it is an experiment that found something. What it found was that the Earth shows no detectable motion through any luminiferous medium. This is a result. It is a clear, reproducible, precisely measured result. It has been confirmed by every subsequent repetition of the experiment with sufficient precision. It is one of the most important experimental results in the history of physics.
The scientific establishment's response — to invent a physical shrinkage of the apparatus that was exactly the right size to cancel the expected result, and that could not be directly detected by any other means — is a textbook example of what happens when a consensus theory encounters an inconvenient experimental result. The theory was not updated. The experiment was explained away. For eighteen years. Until Einstein came along and said the obvious thing: the aether does not exist, the speed of light is constant, and Michelson and Morley were right.

QUESTIONS THE FAKEX EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS DIVISION HAS BEEN ASKED
WAS MICHELSON-MORLEY A FAILED EXPERIMENT?
No. This is the most common mischaracterisation of the experiment and it is wrong. Michelson and Morley set out to measure the Earth's motion through the aether. They measured it. The measurement was zero. A measurement of zero is a measurement. It is a result. It is, in this case, one of the most important results in the history of physics. Calling it a failure because it did not find what the establishment expected to find is like calling a pregnancy test a failure because it came back negative. The test worked. The result was clear. The result was negative. That is information. That is science.
DID THE APPARATUS ACTUALLY SHRINK?
No. Lord Rayleigh attempted to measure the FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction directly in 1902 using birefringence in glass. He found nothing. The apparatus had not shrunk. The shrinkage hypothesis was an ad hoc explanation invented specifically to preserve the aether theory in the face of a result that contradicted it. It was not based on any independent evidence. It was not confirmed by any independent experiment. It was a theory invented to explain away a result. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division has a word for this. The word is in the folder. DOES THE EXPERIMENT PROVE THE EARTH IS STATIONARY?
This is where it gets interesting, and where FakeX takes a deliberately agnostic position. Einstein's special relativity, which correctly explains the Michelson-Morley result, says that there is no such thing as absolute motion. There is no experiment that can determine whether you are "truly" stationary or "truly" moving at constant velocity — only relative motion between observers is measurable. So the question "is the Earth stationary?" is, under relativity, not a well-formed question. What the experiment shows is that the Earth has no detectable motion relative to the speed of light. WHY DID THE ESTABLISHMENT TAKE 18 YEARS TO ACCEPT THE RESULT?
The aether was not just a theory. It was the foundation of 19th century physics. Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism, which were the crowning achievement of Victorian physics, were formulated in terms of the aether. The entire framework of wave optics assumed the aether. Abandoning the aether meant abandoning the conceptual foundation of a century of physics. This is uncomfortable. It is much more comfortable to suggest that the apparatus shrank. The FakeX Experimental Physics Division understands the impulse. We have, on occasion, suggested that our own apparatus shrank rather than accept an inconvenient result. Albert Michelson and Edward Morley built the most sensitive optical instrument of their era, floated it on mercury to eliminate vibration, rotated it through every possible orientation, repeated it at different times of day and year, and obtained a clear, reproducible, precisely measured result. The result was null. The null result was correct. The scientific establishment responded by suggesting the apparatus had physically contracted by an amount that was exactly right, that could not be independently measured, and that conveniently preserved the existing theory.
